Loongson is coming soon: craftsmanship makes Intel shame

On March 11, according to a report by Tongxin Software, Loongson Zhongke Vice President Zhang Ge and Gao Xiang announced the upcoming new processors Loongson 3A5000 and 3C5000 at the recent small symposium on the development status and future trends of the basic software and hardware of Xinchuang. News coming out.

In April 2020, Hu Weiwu, Chairman of Godson Technology Co., Ltd., revealed in his speech “The Road to Independent CPU Development” that the Godson 3A5000 CPU has been taped out in the first half of the year. The news came out in August that the Loongson 3C5000 has also been taped out and released this year, which can be said to be a matter of course.

It is reported that the Loongson 3A5000 uses a 12nm process (Intel is still 14nm+++……), a 4-core design, a frequency of up to 2.5GHz, doubled LLC, and optimized memory controller delay bandwidth. The 3C5000 is also a 12nm process, adopts a 16-core design, and supports 4-16 channels of servers. Hu Weiwu once said that the performance of the 3A5000 has reached the level of the AMD excavator architecture processor, and the performance of the 3C5000 will be even better.

Many years ago, the country has recognized the importance of the semiconductor industry and issued a number of policies to support and help domestic semiconductor companies. After Huawei is facing a core shortage problem, semiconductors have received more and more attention. Huawei launched the Kunpeng processor based on the ARM instruction set, and Loongson chose a more difficult path-self-developed LoongArch instruction set.

In the 21st century, whether the semiconductor industry is prosperous directly shows the strength of a country’s civil frontier technology. The success of the Loongson 3A5000 and 3C5000 has played a vital role in the research and development of domestic processors.

However, the new architecture still needs software to be adapted. Academician Ni Guangnan said:

I hope to use the latest Loongson 3A5000/3C5000 products as soon as possible, and look forward to the next step that Loongson will join the open source command alliance system, and continue to make more important contributions to the creation of an independent open source industrial system ecosystem in my country.

Compared with giants such as Intel, Samsung, and Hynix, domestic semiconductor companies still have a long way to go. Fortunately, with the support of policies, the Loongson self-developed instruction set processor has been successfully taped out. The yield rate of SMIC’s 14nm process has caught up with TSMC. The 7nm process has completed its technology research and development and is preparing for production.

Today, TSMC’s process has reached 5nm, which is getting closer and closer to the limits of current semiconductor processes. When looking for new breakthroughs, new architectures and new technologies must be used. Domestic semiconductor companies can now accumulate technology and experience, and then they may be able to overtake corners.
